I like to create desserts that taste amazing. “I am definitely not a recipe snob and I am not afraid to jump in and get my hands dirty. I get my recipes from all over,” Solomon stated. “I’m not Anthony Viso, but just like the Visos, I want to offer the residents of this area a unique, high quality bakery where they can get an award-winning product. Once I’m up and running, we will have plenty of time to create,” the owner said. I will start off, just offering the basics. “At this point, I just want to get in and get open. People came from hours away in other states for the events. Solomon said that she recently sold over 1000 Groupons for chocolate tastings at her Mantua location. The professional chocolatier also hopes to launch some tasting and other in-store events. She also plans to have a delivery service down the line for her products. She eventually hopes to add a fresh fruit smoothie and coffee bar in-store that will also feature cappuccinos, vegan desserts and herbal teas, after she gets underway. To start out, she said that she’ll offer 20-45 different products in her cases each day. Solomon said that she is “taking it a day at a time,” and will add more to her menu and offerings as the business grows. Eventually, Solomon hopes that Viso will also teach her how to make his Limoncello and Rum Cakes, because both, she said, “are fabulous.” Picking up her order last summer is how she discovered the shop was available for lease. She used to carry his cannoli at her shop in Mantua. “Anthony is coming in this week to teach me how to make his cannoli, Italian cookies and maybe some of his other amazing recipes,” Solomon said, smiling with enthusiasm. Baker Anthony Viso, who recently retired, operated the popular Viso’s Authentic Italian Desserts at the same site in the Valley View Plaza Shopping Center, from December 2008 until September 2017. In addition to her bite-sized sampler trays, Solomon says that Devour Desserts is famous for its butter cakes in assorted flavors, its cakes and cupcakes, stuffed with truffle fillings, its unique creations and anything and everything chocolate.Īlong with her own handcrafted product line, Solomon hopes to incorporate some specialties missed by former longtime customers of Viso’s. “I had to move out of my home and into a shop,” Solomon joked, “So my kids would stop eating everything that I was making while I slept at night!” Thanks to a growing and very loyal customer base, Solomon, a lifelong “Jersey girl,” opened her first Devour Desserts in May 2015 at 671 Bridgeton Pike in Mantua. Working out of her kitchen, the self-taught chocolatier and baker catered and filled orders for four years. From that day, she gathered a following, and never looked back. She started off by making trays of her decadent desserts and launched a tasting down the street from her home at a local winery. Her hobby soon blossomed into a career and she founded Devour Desserts in 2011. She had previously sent her work associates cut-fruit bouquets as thank-you gifts and incentives, but had grown bored with the same old standard selection. Receiving super positive feedback, she began creating trays of delicious creations for her own clients at Tastefully Simple, where she worked as a team leader for sales consultants for ten years. When her husband, Scott, needed a gift to impress clients at work, Solomon began whipping up trays of her decadent creations. As an adult, when Solomon was busy raising three children, now ages 12, 16 and 17, she would bake as a hobby for friends and family, because she found her time in the kitchen served a cathartic stress-reliever. While friends were mesmerized by Saturday morning cartoons, she was watching cooking shows. Solomon said her love of baking goes as far back as childhood. Her first Devour Desserts is across the bridge in Mantua, N.J. This will be the second location that Solomon is opening. Solomon painted the shop fuchsia and white, giving the 3,500-square-foot shop a new vibrancy and style of its own.
